This was my first Murdoch novel and I was super-excited to read it. It turned out to be a really painfully boring read – how Murdoch spun so many pages out of such a weak storyline and won a Booker is beyond me. I read on and on expecting the novel to pick up or something amazing to happen and was relieved to finish. Perhaps I missed a trick? The saving grace were the descriptions of the sea which were well written. I especially liked the one comparing the sea to jelly.
